Matillion appoints ex-Google leader to boost AI data platform

Tue, 27th May 2025

Matillion has named Frank Weigel, formerly of Google and Microsoft, as its new Chief Product Officer.

The appointment comes as Matillion continues to expand its Data Productivity Cloud platform and adds further features targeting artificial intelligence and advanced data integration for enterprise customers.

Frank Weigel brings experience from both startup ventures and major technology firms, including a tenure as Vice President at Microsoft. His responsibilities during that time included simplifying complex technologies and supporting their adoption on a wide scale, work which he is set to extend at Matillion.

Speaking on his appointment, Frank Weigel said, "After two decades gaining experience across both Silicon Valley startups and Big Tech, I am eager to bring that perspective to further establish the Data Productivity Cloud as the most intuitive and effective data integration platform for the AI era."

He added, "Recognizing that enterprise AI relies critically on accessible internal data, I'm thrilled by the opportunity to empower humans and AI agents to gather and transform the data they need – both with AI-driven tools and for their AI initiatives."

During his career, Weigel has contributed to the development of low-code and no-code solutions, including the launch of Microsoft Power Apps and Google App Integration, experience expected to play a role as Matillion enhances its platform's AI and data integration capabilities.

Welcoming Weigel to the company, Matillion Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder Matthew Scullion said, "I am delighted to welcome Frank Weigel to the Matillion executive team. As enterprises urgently demand exponential growth of their data, data integration needs to evolve and take advantage of the AI opportunity to achieve that scale. With his domain experience and years at the heart of Silicon Valley, Frank is perfectly placed to shape the Data Productivity Cloud to meet these ever-growing and evolving needs."

Matillion achieved unicorn status in 2021 following a Series E funding round and introduced its flagship Data Productivity Cloud platform in 2023. Since then, the company has integrated artificial intelligence features and established connections with technologies such as Snowflake Cortex AI and AWS Bedrock.

The platform is relied upon by a number of major enterprises, including Cisco, London Stock Exchange Group, EDF, and Slack, supporting various applications from operational analytics to machine learning and artificial intelligence use cases.
