Eltropy has concluded its fifth annual Leadership Summit in Monterey, California, bringing together more than 90 senior executives from credit unions and community banks.

The three-day event focused on the economy, artificial intelligence and growth, with sessions drawing on research from Gallup, Callahan & Associates and Filene Research Institute. It was also the first time the summit had been held on the Pacific coast.

The programme centred on how community financial institutions should approach AI, balancing efficiency gains against operational risk and the role of staff in customer relationships. Attendees included C-suite executives and other senior leaders from credit unions and community banks, the market for Eltropy's communications software.

Early research sessions featured Gallup, where Alexis Li, Senior Workplace Strategist, told attendees that leadership attitudes can determine whether AI adoption succeeds. Gallup later returned for a joint strategy workshop with Filene on industry changes and the decisions leaders may face next.

Callahan & Associates presented an economic outlook, while panel discussions examined growth and efficiency. One session on efficiency, moderated by Kavitha Nalla, Chief Financial Officer at Eltropy, focused on the financial impact of AI rather than broader rhetoric around the technology.

Eltropy also used the summit to outline a practical approach to adoption. Abhishek Tiwari, Chief Product Officer, urged attendees to focus first on data quality, start with small deployments and avoid using AI without a clear purpose.

Debate on AI

A central feature of the summit was a live debate on the motion "Let AI Do the Work While Humans Go to the Beach." Moderated by Sundeep Kapur, the session pitted advocates of wider AI use against executives arguing for caution.

Ashish Garg, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Eltropy, argued in favour of the motion alongside Evelin Andrade-Wells of Kemba Financial Credit Union and Todd Ulicny of Cobalt Credit Union. Opposing them were Mike McWethy of Texans Credit Union, Scott Rabe of STCU and Steve Meyer of Truity Credit Union.

The opposing side raised concerns about fraud, risk, economics and aspects of customer service they said technology could not replace. Garg's team won the audience vote by a narrow margin.

After the result was announced, Garg reflected on the contest.

"My opponent's a Texan who could probably take me in a fight - he couldn't take me in this one. But the real win was the room. Somewhere between Wall-E, the Terminator and a washing machine, we had a genuinely honest debate about AI and humanity that isn't going to end when the summit does," said Garg, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Eltropy.

Leadership theme

The event also emphasised management culture as many financial institutions test how far they can automate routine work. Sessions urged leaders to frame AI as an opportunity for employees rather than an added burden on already stretched teams.

That message reflects a wider debate in banking and credit unions, as institutions try to modernise customer communications while managing compliance and maintaining trust. For smaller lenders in particular, decisions on automation can carry added weight because of tighter staffing and closer customer relationships.

Eltropy sells software for credit unions and community banks that combines text, voice, video, chat and automation. It positions AI as part of that offering, focusing on consumer communications across lending, servicing, collections, marketing, contact centre and branch operations.

The summit combined formal sessions with private dinners and leisure activities around Monterey Bay, including a dinner at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and a closing beachside event. Garg delivered the closing keynote, titled "Leading What's Next."

Nandita Verma, Vice President of Marketing at Eltropy, commented on the effort behind the gathering.

"Watching this come together against that backdrop, I felt so proud. None of it happens without a team that pours that much heart into every detail. That's what made the vision real, and it set the tone for everything that came after," said Verma.
