AppControl brings timeline-based performance tracking

AppControl has launched a Windows system-monitoring utility that keeps a visual history of PC performance and hardware activity. It aims to help users understand why a computer slows down, heats up, or behaves unexpectedly.

The software displays timelines for CPU, GPU, memory, disk usage, and temperature, and flags privacy-relevant activity such as webcam, microphone, and location access. It targets everyday Windows users who struggle to interpret background activity using existing tools.

Windows includes built-in utilities such as Task Manager and Resource Monitor, but they focus on current activity. They also require users to recognise process names and interpret technical indicators, which can make it hard to identify what caused a short-lived spike after it has passed.

AppControl focuses on historical context, recording a second-by-second system history for up to three days. Users can scroll back and hover over spikes in CPU, GPU, disk, memory, or temperature, and the interface identifies the app or process responsible at that moment.

AppControl is positioned as a way to correlate system behaviour with specific apps and background processes. It describes processes in plain language rather than showing only executable names, reflecting how much more activity now happens in the background, including update services, synchronisation tools, and device-management components.

The utility also provides alerts tied to events beyond resource spikes, such as silent background updates and the appearance of new or unsigned applications. Users can disable or block apps that cause issues through controls inside the utility.

Jon Hundley, co-founder and CEO, said the product addresses the gap between what users experience and what existing tools show.

"People shouldn't need to be experts to understand their own computers," said Hundley.

He also pointed to the volume of background activity on modern PCs as a reason for stronger visibility.

"You paid for your PC hardware, and you deserve to know how it's being used, especially as Windows PCs are doing far more in the background than they were a few years ago."

Privacy signals

Alongside performance monitoring, AppControl surfaces indicators tied to sensitive device features. It alerts users when apps access the webcam, microphone, or location, and presents the activity in plain language linked to the specific process involved.

Privacy and transparency have become sharper concerns as more applications rely on background services and collaboration tools increase the use of audio and video peripherals. For many users, the first sign of such activity is a camera LED or a system notification, which may not identify the precise component responsible.

AppControl says it collects little to no data by default and does not require registration. It also says some features, including suspicious-app detection, are optional and require user consent.

Technical build

The utility uses a hybrid architecture that combines a low-level system driver, a service, and an interface built with Flutter. This setup is intended to correlate hardware-level telemetry with application behaviour. Standard user-mode tools have limits on what they can observe and attribute, particularly when a process starts and exits quickly or when activity is spread across services.

The application runs on modern versions of Windows without security warnings or workarounds, according to the company. AppControl is also a certified member of the Intel Partner Alliance, it said.

Softpedia published comments from Mihaela Teodorovici, its Windows editor in chief, on the product's feature set.

"Providing an alternative to Task Manager, AppControl brings to the table a set of features that are sought after by power users, out of which real-time and historical resource monitoring is the most noticeable," said Teodorovici.

She also highlighted the monitoring and alerting elements as a way to track system state over time.

"With custom alerts and continuous event monitoring, AppControl allows you to get a better overview of the PC's activity and performance status, all to stay in control of processes and resources."

AppControl has also set up a Discord server for user engagement and feedback, where users can discuss issues and suggestions with the team and other users.
