Walmart de México y Centroamérica is expanding its partnership with Vusion to deploy the EdgeSense connected store platform across its Walmart Express stores, with a later phase planned for Walmart Supercenters.
The rollout marks the first large-scale EdgeSense deployment in Latin America. All Walmart Express stores are expected to be fully equipped by the end of 2026.
Under the initial phase, Walmart Express stores will receive more than 1.7 million electronic shelf labels and more than 180,000 EdgeSense smart rails. The retailer will also begin a pilot in its Bodega format to assess how the technology could be used in another part of its estate.
The project expands an existing relationship between Walmart and Vusion that already includes deployments in the US, while adding Mexico to Vusion's broader push to grow its store technology footprint in the Americas.
Walmart de México y Centroamérica is Mexico's largest retailer and operates multiple formats across Mexico and Central America, including Bodega Aurrera, Walmart Supercenter, Sam's Club and Walmart Express. It employs more than 200,000 associates in the region.
EdgeSense combines shelf infrastructure, computer vision, artificial intelligence, electronic shelf labels and retail data in a single store platform. Walmart de México y Centroamérica plans to use the system to modernise store operations, reduce manual tasks and free staff to focus more on customers.
The deployment forms part of a broader digital store modernisation programme. The Express rollout is expected to be the first stage before expansion into the Supercenter estate.
Retailers are increasingly using electronic shelf labels and related in-store systems to manage pricing, inventory and staff workflows with fewer manual processes. In Latin America, deployments at this scale have been less common, making the Walmart Mexico project a notable regional implementation.
Vusion serves more than 350 retail groups globally and focuses on digital systems for physical stores. Formerly known as VusionGroup, it develops products that connect in-store hardware with the data and software tools retailers use to manage merchandising and operations.
For Walmart de México y Centroamérica, the rollout comes as large retailers continue to invest in store technology aimed at improving operational control and visibility over shelf stock. The Bodega pilot also suggests the retailer is assessing whether a common technology approach can work across different store models.
Paul Lewellen, Chief Operating Officer of Walmart de México y Centroamérica, said the deployment would help modernise store operations and allow associates to focus more on serving customers.
"The deployment of EdgeSense will help us further modernize our store operations and empower our associates to focus on serving customers. This initiative represents an important step in strengthening our operational capabilities while continuing to improve the shopping experience for millions of customers across Mexico," Lewellen said.
Philippe Bottine, deputy CEO and EVP of Vusion Americas, described the project as a significant step in the companies' broader relationship.
"We are very excited that Walmart is expanding its relationship with Vusion to Walmart Mexico. The rollout of EdgeSense across Walmart Express stores and the planned expansion to Supercenters represent a major milestone in our shared vision of building the connected store of the future. By combining AI, computer vision, and real-time data, EdgeSense helps retailers achieve new levels of operational excellence while delivering better experiences for both associates and shoppers," Bottine said.
